Clam Bayou Nature Preserve – Gulfport’s Wilderness

I went to the pier predawn this morning and had a tug to go somewhere else. So I ventured over the our little piece of wilderness, Clam Bayou.

It was especially quiet this morning. In fact the only sounds, aside from my footsteps on the path, were an occassional heron and soft little splashes from fish jumping.

The boardwalks on Clam Bayou are great.

It’s really nice to be out alone at sunrise with nothing but a little nature to keep one company.

The water was alive with schools of fish this morning. Feeding time I presume, for fish and water birds.

This morning had a special treat for me with the fresh smell of dew and sweet plant breath. Ahhhhh, if I closed my eyes I would have thought I was in the mountains somewhere. Hey, even with my eyes open I felt that experience.

Is this really Gulfport?

And then sun started to rise. I didn’t expect much color, but sure enough the sky put on a show. Below is a shot of the lone remains of an old Washingtonian Palm. Not to long ago there were two, but the other fell and left this one alone to touch the sky.

I tell you I am so glad I followed the tug to come to Clam Bayou this morning. I think the next photo is one of the prettiest I have ever taken.

For you in Gulfport, do not forget we have this little piece of paradise wilderness right here in our very own backyard. In the midst of our urban environment, a person can truly experience the peace and tranquility of nature with out leaving Gulfport, Florida.

Gulfport in the Morning

I am sure people who check out my photos have noticed I take a lot of sunrise pix. Well, that’s true. I do take a lot of sunrise pix from the waterfront in Gulfport.

I usually head into my office before the sun comes up so I can get some work done before the total chaos of the day begins. A part of my morning routine is to drive through town to make sure Gulfport is still here, and to see what the water looks like. “Is it calm? Low tide? High Tide? Are there manatees swimming by the Casino? Dolphins? Are there people fishing on the pier?” And so on. All these questions need to be answered before I can concentrate on work.

Then every once in a while the beauty takes me and I have to stop. I fight off the guilt about not running in to do my work and tell myself that I work hard and deserve a few Zen moments to watch the sun come up. And I grab my camera.

Gulfport on the water as the sun comes up is definitely the quietest and most peaceful time of day around here. The water is often like glass and the early morning fish play and make circlular ripples in the water. As the sun gets closer to rising the seagulls start talking and begin to fly around the pier and Casino. People walk their dogs and joggers are always out at this time. Normally I see other photographers capturing the beauty as there is an abundance. And it is quiet. Morning greetings with other people are gentle “Good mornings” and smiles. We all know, it is a time of peace and harmony. As the rest of Gulfport sleeps, those of us who are lucky to be awake and down at the waterfront have a special treat to start the day.

This morning was one of those special Gulfport mornings. My day coming up is packed with important meetings and many tasks that need to be done before the day is over. Yet even with all that on my plate, I feel my heart beating slow and my breathing is deep. Just 30 minutes or so leaning on the pier and walking around the cabana at Veteran’s Park watching the sun come up has set the mood for the mood for the day.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…

Geckofest 2010 – Part 1: Mid-afternoon

On September 4th (2010) was Gulfport’s 10th Annual Geckofest. It was a total success with great weather, a lot of new and interesting vendors, all kinds of activities, and a wonderful turnout of visitors.

Funniest looking Geckos I have ever seen!

Funniest looking Geckos I have ever seen!

I made two trips down to Geckofest. The first was in the mid-afternoon during the heat of the day. I was pleasantly surprised to see a large crowd of people downtown with a lot of people heading towards the festival from outlying parking areas. It was hot, of course, being Florida on Labor Day weekend, but we had a breeze and it was not nearly as hot as last year. We were spared any rain showers this year which was a treat. Remember Geckofest 2008 when we were in the outer bands of Hurricane Gustov? We had an amazing turnout even with the torrential downpours we had throughout the day!

The big talk of the town this year about Geckofest is how the vendors were set up down the middle of the street instead on the sides as in the past. I liked it and feel it worked well. For one thing, it provided shade which kept the road from being an oven. When the street is open with full sun, it gets a bit warm, to say the least. This year the vendor tents and booths filled the street blocking a lot of the sun.

I think the actual purpose for having the vendors in the middle was to help open up our local businesses to Geckofest attendees. Geckofest is put on by the Gulfport Merchants Association (GMA) whose core purpose for all of these events is to help businesses along Beach Blvd thrive. A topic of discussion and planning has been how to ensure local businesses receive the most benefits from our festivals and events. In the past when the vendors were on the sides of Beach Blvd, all of the people were up and down the middle of the street. To visit our shops and restaurants, they’d be out of the main activity areas behind the vendors which never seems as pretty or fun as the main area. This year’s Geckofest changed that dramatically. While walking up and down the festival, it was natural to notice the permanent businesses along Beach Blvd.

How did this work, you ask? Well…Domain Home Accessories had their best single day ever. This is a significant moment for Gulfport! And I would not think it a stretch of the imagination to say that perhaps this fact would also mean in all of Gulfport’s history, Domain’s successful day is likely the best single day of any retail business on Beach Blvd. BINGO! For Domain Home Accessories and Gulfport!

I passed Maddy from Bo-Tiki during Geckofest and she was grinning ear-to-ear as she said, “I’m having a GREAT day at Bo-Tiki!”

Our fabulous restaurants always do well during Gulfport events, but I’ve heard a few may have set records during Geckofest 2010 also.

The Gulfport Chamber of Commerce plays a big role in Geckofest also, providing valuable information for new visitors to Gulfport and always lending a helping hand (many hands) during any event. Fondly called by locals as the ”Chamber Maids”, the Chamber volunteers consistently go far above and beyond the call-of-duty in this town.

Another topic for Gulfport talk has been the higher quality of vendors this year. Of course artistic quality does not get any higher than Owen Pach Glass. Owen’s work is respected world-wide.

Take a nice long look at this incredible bowl created by Owen:

A photo does not even come close to showing how beautiful his work is. That is why the names of people who collect Owen Pach’s work is like a who’s who of art connoisseurs. Geckofest was truly honored to have Owen here!

I never pass by an opportunity to photograph tie-dye vendors in Gulfport. The “old hippy” element of Gulfport, which I consider myself a part of, is one of the many great flavors of this town.

Of course there were plenty of food and drink vendors along Beach Blvd. during Geckofest this year.

In the photo below, the shot is obviously of a food vendor and some people enjoying Geckofest, but look at the palm trees and sky. Was this not a gorgeous day for a Geckofest? Is Gulfport not a gorgeous place to have a festival?

During the summer I introduced Gulfport to a friend who promotes festivals across the country and around the world. His immediate comment to me after he was walking around Gulfport for about an hour before I met up with him in front of the casino was, “Rob, do you have any idea how many cities that have large festivals in this country would give anything to have what you have right here?” We have tree lined Beach Blvd with cool shops and several resaturants, two beautiful waterfront parks within blocks of Beach Blvd, a nice beach, the historic Gulfport Casino, a great Rec Center, and a VERY interesting small town artsy character. (All this perspective from an hour walk around Gulfport.)

He told me some cities like Everglades City which has their popular Seafood Festival every year, earn more than 90% of their entire annual city budget during one event. With talk from the City of Gulfport that they are having to cut-back on events in the future, it is a perfect opportunity for private promoters to begin discussions with the city about festivals for profit that will pad Gulfport’s budget while also attracting new visitors to Gulfport. With the great testimonials from Domain Home Accessories and Bo-Tiki, it is clear that well organized festivals could be a great boost to our local economy, even during difficult times. (Just my opinion, anyway.)

So I’ll leave with that and will be back in a day or so with more photos including the Geckofest Parade.

Welcome to Rob’s Gulfport! Blog

Well I’ve thought about doing a Gulfport blog for a few years now. I definitely have enough to say and it’s a challenge to find someone who would listen to me talk, so I suppose I can write and if someone reads it that is great. If nobody reads my blog, I’ll not know so my feelings won’t be hurt.

Nice morning in Gulfport on Boca Ciega Bay - June 20, 2010

Nice morning in Gulfport on Boca Ciega Bay - June 20, 2010

My role in the Gulfport community has developed due to the photos I take around here. I like to think I have an eye for beauty, and there is a lot of that in Gulfport. My first year in Gulfport I took a few hundred photos of downtown, Clam Bayou, and the Boca Ciega Bay.  My desire to share them led to creating the GulfportFlorida.us website. Even though site has taken a life of it’s own, the photo gallery slideshow is what people notice more than anything. Right now there are over 200 photos in the slideshow, so I doubt very many people are patient enough to sit through the whole collection. I have had several people suggest, sometimes rather strongly, that I only keep a few photos in it so people will be able to see all of them. But I figure if someone really wants to see them all, they can pour a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and sit back and relax while watching the photos display. I purposely mix them up every once in a while to keep it fresh, and definitely add new photos regularly. Does anybody actually sit through them all anymore? Who knows, but I do every once in a while when I need to unwind.

At first all my photos were of places and things, like buildings, birds and sunsets/sunrises. But as I got to know the people around Gulfport, I started adding a few pix of some of the more visible personalities of Gulfport. Like Keith Stillwagon, one of Gulfport’s favorite artists:

Another high profile Gulfport personality I have had the priviledge to photograph is Sea Breeze Manor Bed and Breakfast owner and President of the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce, Lori Rosso:

Lori Rosso, President of the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce at Geckofest 2010

Lori is great and is Gulfport’s representative extraordinaire. I swear everytime Gulfport is featured on the local TV news or travel web sites, you will see Lori smiling and letting the world know what Gulfport is all about.

I think I’ll post a photo of my amazing partner in Gulfport! Magazine, Ester Venouziou who is owner and creator of the very cool LocalShops1. In the photo with her is Lynda Shehan of Auntie Lynda’s Pet Care and Sitting Service.

Ester Venouziou, LocalShops1, and Lynda Shehan, Auntie Lynda's Pet Care

Ester Venouziou, LocalShops1, and Lynda Shehan, Auntie Lynda's Pet Care

Ester has been very patient with me when I write two to three times more words than she asks for in the magazine and is very kind in her method of editing my articles down to the correct length. In fact, this blog is partly inspired by her since it may give me a venue to write as longwinded as I please without concern.

And Lynda…she IS every pet’s hero. Her heart is completely devoted to our furry friends and they, like we, adore her!

So now I think I’ll write an occassional blog and share some photos right here. I do enjoy writing and certainly love this cool little town we live in, so it should be fun (for me anyway). I always have a few new photos to share.

Well, good night!
Rob Fowler
